Operations Work Group

Terminology

Term Name: Operations Work Group

Description: The Operations Work Group handles all interactions with the ranger while we are at events. They also manage set-up and break down of the the game.

Abbreviation or Synonyms: Ops Work Group

Rule Type: Out-of-Game

Setting up and breaking down the game is an important job.

Purpose

The Operations Workgroup is the first to arrive on site on the Friday of each event. They oversee emptying out the props shed and setting up the logistics building. Electric torches are placed and managed by Operations as are any signs put out. When something goes wrong and the ranger needs to be contacted you should speak to a member of the Operations Work Group. Lighting fires (other than candles) must be done by members of the Operations Work Group.

The marshal for the Operations workgroup is Chris Soukup and the second is Zach Goldstein.

Volunteering

Every single event Operations needs help with unloading (on Friday) and reloading (on Sunday) the prop shed. On Sundays we also need to sweep every building and mop some of them. Volunteers are always needed for this, no sign up necessary just show up at the logistics building, at 4pm Friday for set up, and around 8-9am on Sunday for clean-up. Prior to helping with site clean-up make sure you have cleaned up your own belongings first. The last person out of each building should also make sure that building is swept.

Operations maintains the props that are stored in the props shed. Sometimes they will have projects to take garb home to launder it or repair things that are starting to suffer from wear. The torches need to be cared for between events as well to make sure they have the maximum charge on Friday night of events. You can also help maintain our relationship with the Boy Scouts by volunteering for their bi-annual "work days" where volunteers help fix up the camp for the benefit of everyone who uses it.

If something on site isn't working, such as the heaters DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX IT YOURSELF. When something breaks it isn't our fault until we try to fix it. The moment we start tinkering with the space heaters we run the risk of not only making it worse, but of making it seem like the reason something broke is because we were messing with it. If something isn't working please contact Ops and let them handle it personally or contact the ranger as necessary.

The Props Shed

Each group is allowed to keep one tote of items in the props shed at a time. That tote should be the standard 18 gallon Rubbermaid rough neck tote.

Totes must be picked up before the game starts and dropped off before the shed is closed again. Any tote that is left abandoned over multiple games may get removed from the shed, if you are not available to get the tote be sure to speak to the Operations Marshal or have a designated individual pick it up.

Fire Safety

The Boy Scouts take fire safety very seriously, and as our hosts are a Boy Scout camp, we need to respect their requirements.

Small controlled flames (candles) can be lit by anyone, but should never be left unattended. If the candle is on the ground, make sure to clear the area of dry leaves and kindling before lighting it, just in case it tips over.

Campfires have important requirements. They may only be made in designated fire pits, and must be lit by an individual approved by someone specifically designated by the operations marshal or second (). Once lit the person who requested the fire is responsible for making sure that someone is attending it for as long as it remains lit. Failing to tend to a lit fire, can result in our entire organization getting kicked off this site, and will result in operations no longer lighting fires for you.
