Passion
The Elemental is the shard of Illumitas’ passion. Not just romantic passion but all strong emotions. It is the Elementals way to live life with reckless abandon, to experience it to its fullest. That she is responsible for the natural order of the world is almost a side effect of this. Of the gods she is most in tune with what it means to live and so she looks over all living things. The Elemental’s relationship with the Elemental Planes is often misunderstood. Some see her as controlling all elementals, after all they share the same name. However they are not under her direct control, they are a fundamental part of the world who even in her absence continued their jobs. Instead it is the Elemental’s place to guide creatures from the Elemental planes. With her passion for life, she sculpts the world and creates nature as she believes it should be. It is the Elemental who decides how the sky looks, what colors flowers should appear, what venison tastes like, and brings rain. These decisions are then carried out by the elementals who make alterations as needed to reach the desired outcome. These lesser elementals are completely capable of working without further direction from the Elemental, carrying out orders as they were last directed. For hundreds of years the Elemental was rumored to be missing. Her disappearance was first noticed after the fall of Nalbendel. She only very recently (in 1587) returned. Where she went, few can say.
Personality and Behavior
The Elemental is the God most in touch with humanity and when she interacts with mortals she is the most understanding of their ways. Some find her to be incredibly fickle, but that is only because when she experiences emotions she experiences them strongly. It is not uncommon for a conversation with the Elemental to swing rapidly from one extreme emotion to another and then right back again. Some find this challenging, others see that with patience she always returns in time. Those who have suffered her wrath aren’t always so forgiving. The darker side of the Elemental is her proclivity for destruction when angered. Most snow goblins will never forgive her for the permanent winter that plagued their lands for so many centuries. While the Elemental cares for all life, it is that which cannot defend itself she cares for most. Ancient trees, greater beasts, these are her favorite children. Certain heretical texts suggest that of all the Sept gods, she is the only goddess who ever knew romantic love. The texts are unclear if this romantic love was with other deities, mortal followers, or possibly even a ghost. Some say she fell in love with the ugliest of mortal men, and thus were the Druids created. Some say she plucked a Spark from the Stranger’s Well, and unleashed her fury at all attempts to reclaim the Spark. Some suggest her lover may even have been Nox, who behaves as much like a scorned lover as it does a god of ill intent.
Physical Description
Ancient ruins or relics bearing her likeness depict a young Elvish woman, in the flower of her beauty, dancing by moonlight in a secluded forest glade. Other times, she is painted as a furious scorned lover, her hair a thunderhead of dark clouds, with lightning crackling from her fingertips. Modern Elvish sculptors in the Great Forest sculpt her as an elf maid, bathing beneath a waterfall, revered by wolves and deer alike. These tributes are always anointed with perfumes and aromatic oils, as these were her earliest gifts to the world. When she appears in visions she is different each time. The only real common theme is that she always appears as a female. She is very commonly Elvish or Human. Her clothing, hair, build, height, voice and even scent are different each time based on her mood. During her absence she seems to have begun to wonder more about snow goblins and has taken their appearance more than once since that time. Prior to that time it was one form she never took.
Avatars of the Elemental
As the Elemental has been missing since the War of the Avatars until very recently she seems to have not made an avatar since that conflict. Most of the Sept’s avatars during that battle are not well known, few had a chance to meet them as they laid their lives down helping the survivors escape the destruction of Nalbendel.
Worship of the Elemental
Live well, for your time is short. Serve passion regardless of creation or destruction. To the everyday follower of the Sept, the Elemental is who they pray to in matters of love, friendship and righteous anger. The Elemental has many names, yet few regular devotees. These things can be attributed to her sometimes wild emotions and the perception that she cares more for the creatures of the forest than for people. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The Elemental cares deeply for all life, even when she is in a wrathful mood. In fact it is her love of life that motivates her to wreak such destruction: sometimes to protect the many she feels she must destroy the few, and she believes in always following her feelings. The Elemental is in contention with the Scholar as the greatest source of artistic inspiration. The exact esoterica of this divine debate have been lost, but it is thought the two gods contested over who could claim the divine right of mortal inspiration. Some poets and playwrights will make a small token sacrifice to the Elemental as their muse. The Elemental is often represented by the druids. The druids and witches do what they can to defend their local interests, though they do so without any higher coordination or guidance. To keep lakes clean, or forests free of deadfalls, or to coax blight out of farm fields, or to perform rituals for rain; these are the self-appointed tasks of the druids and the great trees.
Places of Worship
Anywhere outdoors is an appropriate place to worship the Elemental. Buildings and permanent structures are unnecessary and generally unwanted. If shelter is needed a cave can make an excellent location for a shrine to the Elemental. Places that inspire strong emotions are also excellent locations for worship of the Elemental. Any passion, not just romantic passion.
Expectations of Chosen
Many expect the Chosen of the Elemental to be druids and those closest to the natural world. This isn’t always the case. Some individuals are Chosen for their passion and interest in living life to the fullest. The Elemental expects her Chosen to live life passionately about what they care about. Emotions are not something to be feared, they are something to be encouraged. A Chosen of the Elemental fails her by bottling up their emotions and not expressing what they feel is important. Oddly destroying nature is not something that causes the Elemental any issues as long as it is destruction through violence and new growth will be possible. Disrupting land such that it will not be able to grow new life on the other hand is the greatest way to draw the Elemental’s ire.
