Creation
During the period when the Dark Three were imprisoned at Wahkarn, the great godbeast Draconus was quite busy. He created numerous offspring across the world. Each of these dragons, in turn, produced broods of their own. While many of these broods consisted of more dragons, this was not always the case. One dragon, Pisces, began experimenting with magic and the natural creatures that populated the sea. Over many centuries, Pisces discovered ways to transform aquatic lifeforms into humanoid shapes. These beings became known as the Piscenes. The Piscene people were devoted followers of their creator and their society flourished beneath the waves, entirely separate from the civilizations on the surface.
History
Little is known of Picean history.
When the War of the Gods erupted on the surface the Piscenes took no part in the conflict. However, they were not immune to its devastating effects. The Sundering of Vargainen not only ravaged the surface but also had a profound impact on the Piscenes residing closest to the continent. They were forced to relocate their vast undersea empire, an experience that left an indelible mark on their society. Unlike the surface dwellers, who received direct divine aid, the Piscenes suffered far greater casualties.
In the 1600 years since then, Piscene society has remained largely unchanged. While Pisces disappeared for an extended period, it had little impact on their reverence for her. Utilizing rivers for travel the Piscenes occasionally interact with the surface world, but only when absolutely necessary. These interactions often involve complaints about the land-walkers' pollution of the water.
Population
What few people realize is that the Piscene Empire dwarfs all of the civilizations on the surface in terms of both size and population. Those on the surface simply lack the opportunity to witness this, as only a limited portion of the Piscene population ever interacts with the surface world. When Piscenes do interact with air-breathers, they often do so from a distinctly alien perspective. Possessing their own unique culture and little incentive to learn about the cultures of the land, they frequently come across as hostile and foreign.
Piscenes
The Piscenes are the sole citizens of the underwater Piscene Empire. They have resided there for millennia, long before the Sundering, and will likely endure long after other civilizations have crumbled. A diverse race, Piscenes have evolved from various fish species. Land-dwellers often perceive them as strange and rude due to their uniquely alien culture, developed in isolation from the rest of the world. Piscene customs are distinct, and they rarely take the time to explain them to outsiders.
Piscene interactions with the surface are infrequent, typically stemming from concerns about water pollution caused by land-walkers. They generally lack the inclination or need to trade with surface dwellers, but when they do, shells have historically been their preferred currency. In recent years, this trade has significantly diminished, and they now often accept surface currency for exchanges. However, they still seem to favor shells, often insisting on exchanging goods for any shells carried by land-dwellers.
All Piscenes possess scales and possess a fish-like head.
The Piscenes reverently worship Draconus and Pisces, Draconus' only known representative on Novitas. Pisces is also their creator. Since Pisces' return, they have dedicated all their efforts to pleasing her through any means possible.
