Skill Name: | Power Points
|
---|---|
Skill Tree: | Magic
|
Prerequisite(s): | None
|
Skill Point Cost: | 1
|
Description: | Gain 1 power point per game day. May be taken twenty (20) times. |
A requirement for casting spells without the help of magical items.
Description
Different characters envision Power points to be different things. They could be a representation of the understanding of magic, a demonstration of will, raw ability, or even deals struck with dark entities. However you decide your character views their mystical ability, they have learned the most basic unit of how to cast a spell. Power points are the fuel for each spell a character casts.
You'll need to learn at least one spell to then be able to use these Power points.
Effect
This skill can be taken up to twenty times. It determines how much Power a character has. Power is the maximum number of power points a character can have.
Your character's maxiumum Power is determined by how many skill points you have in Power plus any Power gained from items. Your current Power is defined as your character's maximum Power minus what you have spent casting spells that game day.
Some items can give characters additional points of Power. These add to the character's maximum and current number of power points. If an item or other effect would give you more than twenty Power, any Power gained over twenty has no effect unless the source explicitly says it breaks cap.
If you hear a PC say that they are "tapped", they are typically referencing that they out of Power for that game day. |
Characters start each event with their Power point pool full. Power points replenish at convergence and the end of each event. This includes any extra points of Power gained from items.
Items that replenish Power points can be used to return spent ones but cannot bring a character above their current Power. Regardless of the source, characters cannot spend more than 20 Power points in a single game day unless an effect says it breaks the Power point cap.
References
Power Point Cap
Characters can never spend more than 20 magic power points in a single game day. Attempting to do so causes the character to gain an unpreventable Torso Wound condition as the magical energies tear the character apart. This will also cause the spell casting to fail. Abilities that grant characters power points that break cap do not count against this limit.
Convergence
Every 6 hours starting at midnight Friday night, there is a 'Convergence' in game. From a narrative perspective this is the leylines pulsing with energy, recharging magical abilities and some items. We call the time between two convergences one 'Game Day'. There are 5 convergences during an event. Although the 6am convergence between 1st and 2nd shift is outside of the game hours, it still happens for purposes of power refreshing.
At this time:
- Players power point pools replenish
- Any spells with a duration of 'Game Day' expire.
- Abilities that can be used a certain number of times per 'Game Day' replenish
Effects which last the entire event last until the end of 4th shift.
When a Convergence happens, it is common practice to yell loudly 'Convergence!' as a way to notify everyone without a watch that it has happened. This is considered an out-of-game call.
School Master
This title represents seven different titles at once, one for each school of magic. A character becomes a School Master (replacing "school" with the name of school you have mastery in, such as Aegis Master) when they:
- Have obtained all 20 power points.
- Learned all spells in a school.
- Upon learning all the spells in a school, learned the ritual skill for that school (or gained it via the Scholar RP Skill).
Characters can become masters of every school they qualify for.
Upon becoming a Master of a School, the character may choose one level two or higher spell to specialize in. You cannot change this spell after it is selected. Your selected spell costs you one less power point to cast (to a minimum of 1). This discount does not stack with other discounts you can obtain through the game, most notably with the Master's Staff, unless it is specifically stated otherwise.
A Master of a School is the only one who can benefit from a Master's Staff.
