Chosen of the Stranger Role-Playing Skill | |
![]() ![]() |
Chosen characters have earned the attention of the gods through their actions. Not every Chosen agrees with the god who supports them, though they will need to come to terms with it eventually if they wish to advance their rank. As one of the Chosen it is a character's duty to make that God's presence felt by others; that God has selected those characters as their agents in the world to carry out their agenda. Before deciding that your character is chosen, it is recommended that you read that God's relevant worldbook section to understand their impact on the world.
Description
Those Chosen by the Stranger are selected for their discretion with secrets and their ability to put to rest those who need to be put to rest. They are often tasked with putting to rest ghosts, undead or even sometimes those among the living who have upset the Stranger. Each has a great respect for the importance of death in the natural order of things, but that doesn’t mean they don’t fight to help the living.
Failing the Stranger is done through causing indiscriminate death, not respecting death, deliberately creating undead, or revealing the secrets of the dead. She is capable of forgiveness, but it is a challenging and often long process to earn.
Chosen of the Stranger gain abilities that allow them to control undead, gain a rank in the medium skill that does not count towards RP skill cap, and can cast some Necromancy spells with no Power point cost.

For each rank of Chosen of the Stranger the character posesses, they may cast any level 2 Necromancy spell once per event.

You count as one rank higher in the Medium roleplaying skill. If you don't possess any ranks in Medium, you gain Medium 1 (Basic). This does not count against RP skill cap.
This can result in your character having:
- Four different roleplaying skills (e.g., your Chosen of the Stranger skill up to rank 5, Maven at rank 5, a second skill up to rank 2, and Medium 1).
- Chosen of the Stranger 3 and Medium 3 simultaneously, if Medium is at rank 2 when this ability is taken.
Chosen 4 (Expert)
Cast any level 4 Necromancy spell with no power point cost twice per event.
Chosen 5 (Master)
Work with Rules to create a custom ability.

Shrines
A shrine is an object (or group of objects) that represents a single one of the gods. Each gods' shrines have a different item number.
![]() As a non-lootable item that can be placed anywhere, a player could in theory put a Darkness shrine right in the middle of town and there is nothing anyone could do about it. Don't do this. Any Shrine dedicated to any god placed in a deliberately hostile location will draw the ire of the gods. Expect there to be consequences from YOUR DEITY. Shrines belong in sacred sites, locations with some association with the deity. That association could be somewhere important to you, or your home, but places where a shrine will be regularly greeted with direct hostility don't create the reverence the shrine is supposed to generate. |
Consecrating a Shrine
Shrines can be set up in any location but must then be consecrated with the consecrate ritual before they can be used. Once consecrated a shrine cannot be moved. When a shrine has been consecrated tie a blue ribbon to the shrine, this is the only reason a blue ribbon should ever be attached to a shrine. Consecration lasts between events and so the blue ribbon should stay attached between events as well (the shrine must be placed in the same location each event as long as it remains consecrated). Tie the ribbon on securely, but make sure it can be removed.
Desecrating a Shrine
Using the Desecration ritual, others can deconsecrate the shrine removing the ribbon. The owner of a shrine may also voluntarily remove the ribbon without a ritual. This would typically be done because they wish to move it to a new location. When either of these things happen the shrine must be reconsecrated using the Consecrate ritual once more before it can be used again.
Activating Shrines
Any Chosen of the god the shrine is dedicated to may pray at a consecrated shrine to activate it.
When activated if the shrine is in a building a Septly shrine create a Sanctified field. Shrines dedicated to one of the Dark 3 create an Unhallowed field. Finally, shrines dedicated to Draconus can do either.
When activated while outside of a building all shrines produce a Sanctuary field regardless of deity they are dedicated to.
The field created lasts as long as the Chosen is praying, and thus can't be dispelled (the effect would end and immediately begin again because the prayer is still ongoing).
Chosen Created Shrines
Anyone with the Chosen RP skill may craft a single shrine for free with no crafting point cost or skills required. This may be done once ever, during pre-production for any event of the players choosing. Additional shrines must then be crafted as normal.
This free shrine is automatically consecrated for free once when it first enters play, but if it becomes deconsecrated, it must be reconsecrated normally.
