Description: | Allows a character to use scrolls. |
This skill is required for characters to use scrolls.
Description
Reading magic in its written form is unusual. After binding the magical energies to a piece of paper, an incantation is written down in one of the standard languages of Novitas. However, some amount of magical skill is required and simply reading the incantation aloud is not enough. By learning to bring this intent to the casting, a character is able to use the spells recorded onto scrolls and save their own mystical power in the process.
Effect
Characters with this skill are able to use scrolls.
Scrolls do not consume the caster's power points when used.
When a scroll has a range of self, you may only use it if you know the spell on the scroll.

Using Scrolls
A scroll is a consumable item that can be used by a character with the read magic skill to cast the spell written upon it. The scroll provides the power points and knowledge needed to cast the spell written on it and then it is destroyed.
When a scroll has a range of self, you may only use it if you know the spell on the scroll.
Scrolls are produced using the scribe scroll skill and production points.
Incantations
To cast a spell, you must speak an incantation. Spells have no fixed incantations, each character is free to create their own unique way of showing how they cast magic. While most players use spoken words, this isn't required; incants can be sung, chanted, or even dramatically role-played. The important part is that no matter how the player casts spells, their incants must meet the requirements.
Requirements for a proper incantation:
- An incantation must be a minimum of 8 words, which must include the name of the spell being performed.
- You may not bluff one spell and then cast a different one, such as by putting multiple spell names into the incantation.
- The incantation must clearly convey EXACTLY what you are casting.
- Incantations must be spoken loudly and clearly enough that players standing 10 feet away will know that a spell has been cast.
- You may not make the incantation gibberish or attempt to work it into a conversation. It must be both clear that you are casting a spell, and what spell you are casting.
Producing Scrolls
Scrolls are spells partially prepared in advance that must be read aloud by someone who has the Read Magic skill to activate them.
Characters with the Scribe Scroll skill can produce scrolls. To produce a scroll the character must know the spell they wish to create a scroll from. A character with the Savant specialist title may alternately copy any non-scarce scroll they have in their possession instead of needing to know the spell.
If the spell being put into a scroll is level 4 the character must possess a ritual quill as well. When the spell is level 5 not only must the character have a ritual quill, but they must also consume one dose of ritual ink (an alchemical item) per level 5 scroll produced.
Preproduction

Every month dozens of players attend events and as many as half of them will want to create new magic items, produce potions, and make other in-game items. It can take logistics staff hours a month putting all of these orders together, so we use the preproduction system to help make that job a lot easier on them (thank you!).
Preproduction forms are due by 11:59pm on the Sunday prior to an event. Use that form to:
- Craft new items
- Alter props with tinkering
- Produce new consumables
- Create valuable items
- Turn in runes
- Exchange items with merchant skills
- Let us know that you'll need items for being a high-ranking druid or merchant
- Update obsolete consumables
- Obtain items from the Varganien Commissary
By doing this logistics staff has everything they need to make and gather in one single place, making the job much easier.
Savant Title
A character earns the Savant title after obtaining all 20 production points and learning the following skills:
- Alchemy Mastery
- Brew Potion
- Scribe Scroll
- Estimate Value
- First Aid
- Herbalism
- Read Magic
- At least one language that was not inherited at the character's creation.
- Note that every character gains the Common language at creation, even if you choose to roleplay that you don't know it, so does not count towards this title.
Savants gain 5 production points that break cap. When producing potions or scrolls Savants, instead of being limited to only spells they know, may also copy potions and scrolls they have on hand to determine which they can make. This cannot be used to copy scarce items.
Only Savants can use an Alchemist's Laboratory.
